[EN] Alwaid is a female-fronted melodic metal band from Lille, France. With inspirations found in bands such as Therion, Theatre of Tragedy, Epica or Candlemass, the band strives to create a diversity of atmospheres, sometimes relying on symphonic structures and sometimes on more aggressive heavy metal guitars, not forgetting a number of darker pieces when male growls combine with the melodic female vocals.
A first album entitled "Lacus Somniorum" was released in March 2014. The band was named after a star that evokes a nocturnal and oniric world, and each track of this album tells its own story, following the different stages of sleep, from waking to unconsciousness, from insomnia to nightmares. The lyrics are drawn from all great human narratives that speak to our imagination and feelings, such as myths and legends, literature, arts and cinema.
Alwaid has been touring relentlessly since its creation, with over 100 shows in 5 years, not only in France, but also with frequent comings to Belgium, the UK and the Netherlands.
In 2017 Alwaid released a second album, entitled The Machine and the Beast. Released on May 13th 2017, it offers an exploration of the cycle of civilization. The songs relate how mankind struggles to free itself from its primal animality and to gain control over the machine, which will lead to its ultimate fall. Order vs. chaos, instinct vs. reason, desire vs. logic, grandeur vs. decay – multiple conflicting facets and contrary impulses which make man's identity a complex and imperfect one. As a symbol of this dual aspect, and of the album itslef: the mythical Amphisbaena, two-headed serpent that tries to go both ways at once...
Alwaid's inspirations still come from the great works and myths that have left their traces over our culture. Our music is home to literary monsters, formidable Goliaths to be smitten down whatever the price (Moby Dick), or more insidious creatures when the monster hides behind a human face (Mr. Hyde, Jack the Ripper...). Some songs tell of the wonders and misguided ways of relentless science, that ends up defeated by life itself, for « life will find a way » (Ian Malcolm, of course!); others tell of man's anguish when confronting the possibility of his own degeneration (our beloved Lovecraft); others, finally, evoke the romantic nostalgia for a lost state of nature, and the ecstatic liberation you feel when you return to the wild.
[FR] Alwaid est un groupe de metal mélodique à chant féminin, originaire de Lille. S’inspirant de groupes tels que Therion, Theatre of Tragedy, Epica, ou encore Candlemass, le groupe cherche à varier les atmosphères en s'appuyant tantôt sur des orchestrations symphoniques, tantôt sur des guitares plus énergiques dans la lignée du heavy metal, s'aventurant parfois également à des ambiances plus sombres et tourmentées en adjoignant à la voix féminine claire des chants masculins saturés.
Un premier album, "Lacus Somniorum", est sorti en mars 2014. Les morceaux racontent un univers nocturne et onirique, et ce premier album a pour fil conducteur les différentes étapes du sommeil, de l'éveil à l'inconscience, de l'insomnie au cauchemar. Chaque chanson décline ainsi le thème en racontant son histoire propre, et les sources d’inspirations peuvent surgir de la mythologie, de la littérature, du cinéma.
Alwaid fréquente assidûment la scène depuis sa création (plus de 100 concerts au compteur, en France et en Belgique, mais aussi aux Pays-Bas et au Royaume-Uni, où le groupe tourne plusieurs fois par an.)
En 2017 un second album voit le jour, “The Machine And The Beast”. Côté musique, la signature Alwaid reste, tout en se voulant plus affirmée. Alors que le premier album explorait les différentes étapes du sommeil, de l'éveil à l'inconscience, de l'insomnie au cauchemar, le second proposera un regard sur l’évolution de la civilisation. Il évoquera l’extraction du côté bestial de l’être humain et son entêtement à vouloir maîtriser la machine, celle-là même qui provoquera sa perte. Ordre et chaos, instinct et raison, désir et logique, grandeur et décadence, autant de facettes en conflit et de pulsions contradictoires qui font de l'homme l'être complexe et imparfait qu'il est. Symbole de cette dualité, et de l'album lui-même: l'Amphisbène, serpent à deux têtes qui tirent chacune dans une direction différente...
Les sources d'inspiration du groupe restent issues des grandes oeuvres et mythes qui ont marqué notre culture : nous mettons en musique des monstres littéraires, redoutables Goliath à abattre quoi qu'il en coûte (Moby Dick), ou plus insidieux lorsqu'ils se dissimulent sous des traits humains (Mr. Hyde ou Jack l'Eventreur), les progrès merveilleux ou inquiétants d'une science irrépressible, mais forcée de s'avouer vaincue face à la vie qui “trouve toujours un chemin” (Jurassic Park), l'effroi de l'humain confronté à la possibilité de sa propre dégénérescence (Lovecraft) mais aussi la nostalgie romantique d'un état de nature perdu et la libération du retour à l'état sauvage.
